M.A.C. + JIN SOON CHOI

“There are thousands of sheer and natural colors. It’s time to be surprising, revolutionary, edgy. Inspired by architecture, these are colors you’ll now dare to wear.” — Jin Soon

Want complex color that allegedly lasts forever? Check out the nail polish created for M.A.C. by Jin Soon Choi. Known for creating shades with depth and nuance and for her natural hand and foot spa (which counts Sarah Jessica Parker as their first client), Jin Soon has worked with countless fashion and beauty campaigns; from Prada and Missoni to L' Oreal and Cover Girl. And, has worked with Uma Thurman, Rihanna, Hillary Swank, Beyonce and more.

With colors described as mid-tone grey lavender, rich blackened brown, khaki olive green and blackened blue green and with names such as Cool Reserve, Rich Dark Delicious, Dry Martini and Beyond Jealous, respectively, Jin Soon for M.A.C. will surely set you apart from the various red and french manicured nails this summer.

Available at www.maccosmetics.com and in M.A.C. stores and counters beginning August 27 in the U.S. and in September internationally, each polish is $12.

ANNA SUI + TARGET

Finally! Photos of the Gossip Girl-inspired Anna Sui for Target collection are now available. The collection is organized in four distinct groups; outfits befitting Blair, Serena, Vanessa and Jenny. I don't watch the show, but plan to catch up on all of the seasons when they become available on DVD. What do you think? Are the outfits consistent with the styles of each of the four featured characters?
The 19 piece collection will be available in 250 select Target stores September 13 through October 17. For pictures of the entire collection, click here. Click on the label below for vintage Style Collaborations posts.

BETH DITTO + EVANS

Beth Ditto, lead singer of punk rock group Gossip, fashion darling, gay rights activist, feminist, champion for plus size causes and model--most notably as the cover girl for Conde Nast's Love magazine--has designed a line of 80's inspired clothing for the plus size British retailer, Evans. The fashion world has long been criticized for the dearth of high (and lo) fashions for the full figured woman. Many retailers are seeking to address this problem by creating lines geared towards youth oriented plus sizes (see Faith21 for Forever21 discussed infra). Evans, owned by the Arcadia Group, which is parent company to TopShop, was taken to task by Ditto, who demanded that she be allowed to design a line for the company and voila . . . the rest is history. For pictures of the entire Beth Ditto for Evans collection click here.

FOX BRINGS THE FIRST "PLUS SIZE" DATING SHOW

Coming Tuesday, July 28 on Fox is the plus-sized reality dating show More to Love. The show airs at 9 p.m. Eastern.

New Dating Series Executive-Produced by Reality Czar Mike Fleiss

FOX is setting out to prove that love comes in all shapes and sizes with the new inspirational dating competition series MORE TO LOVE. Executive-produced by Mike Fleiss ("The Bachelor," "The Bachelorette"), the unscripted series follows a single average guy with a big waist and an even bigger heart as he romances several confident and secure plus-size women. Each week, the husky hunk will wine and dine a group of curvy women to determine if they have more love to give or if they are truly more than he can handle. When the size of competition narrows, he will have to decide if one full-figured lady will become his true love.

"This is a dating show that sends the right message about embracing and loving yourself no matter your shape or size," said executive producer Mike Fleiss. "When you are comfortable with your own body, you can really allow yourself to be open to the possibility of finding the right person to love."

Katrina Renae: I saw the preview for this and was a little surprised actually. The dude is not that cute and he is a little chunky himself. I'm not impressed. Why do big girls haft to only date big guys?? Can we not get a nice looking man?? Tell me what you guys think about the show?

QUEEN LATIFAH FOR ESSENCE

Queen Latifah graces the covers of the July Issue of Essence. She talks her new album , childhood sexual abuse, and how she is just open for whatever opportunity comes her way. Here is a snippet: During the two decades since she began her ascent, Queen Latifah, born Dana Elaine Owens, has reached higher than she could have ever imagined in her wildest dreams. To an onlooker, it might appear that her every move has been carefully orchestrated, but that wasn't the case. " I never envisioned all of the things that I have accomplished." she tells me days after her 39th birthday party. "In the beginning I just wanted to hear my record on the radio, then I just wanted to make a movie," Latifah confides. "I didnt really have a long term plan, but as more opportunities came my way, I just ran with them."

Janet @ Michael's Memorial Service

Like many of you, I was glued to the Internet from work for hours today, unable to concentrate or focus on anything other than Michael Jackson's memorial service. My co-workers and I sent instant messages, popped in and out of Facebook commenting on the highlights of the services. But perhaps, one of the biggest conversations stemmed around how regal Janet looked today. And you know, we curly curls couldn't help but smile internally because she gracefully rocked a curly side ponytail topped with a beret and big shades. We loved it.

There's no more I can say about the Memorial service because words can not express how much Michael Jackson, rather the Jackson family have and continue to inspire our world-music, dance, fashion, beauty and hair. For that, I am forever grateful to this family. RIP Michael.

Ladies, what do you think about Ms. Jackson, standing ovation or what?

Letters To UrbanCurlz

"I've been a longtime reader and fan of ur blog. I applied a texturizer to my hair earlier this year but since my new growth the textures in my hair look weird (to me at least). Anyway, I'm going to chance getting a short hair style.

1.) Do you recommend a shorter natural cut in the summer?

2.) If so, what short hairstyles would you recommend?

I want sumthin low maintenance and more so on the girly side I don't want to look like a lil boy lol.

Thanks a bunch for ur help."

(urbankittykats.com)

First thing I want to mention is that just because your hair is two textures, doesn't mean that you have to cut it all off. Remember, curly hair is composed of many different textures. So sometimes you just have to be a little creative with the textures by working with different products. Say for example, if your hair is thicker at the roots, try using a heavy product at the roots (i.e. KCCC or Miss Jessies) and a lighter product on the ends (i.e. conditioner only). This works for me because straightening has left me with a looser curl pattern in some areas.

However, in some cases, it's beyond manageable and you have to chop it. So my recommendation is it cut into an edgy style like a mohawk if your texture allows. It doesn't have to be an outrageous look but something subtle like pictured above. This is an awesome look on short curly hair and it exudes so much confidence. Summer is the best time to wear shorter hair because you can just wet and go and re-wet throughout the day if necessary.

Spice it up with color. Another great way to rock your TWA (teeny-weeny afro). This really looks amazing and makes a statement all on its own. I recommend Aveda color because it is 97% natural.

And don't forget your accessories! Any other suggestions, ladies?

Miss Jessie's Quick Curls

I finally got around to trying Miss Jessie's Quick Curls and it's definitely a keeper. Great for wash n go styles, Quick Curls, does exactly what it promises-provides defined shiny curls, fast. It's a weightless formula, so it won't weigh your curls down or give you that crunchy look once dried. And at $9 can't beat the price because a little of this product goes a long way.

Visit Miss Jessie's to get yours.

Get This Look: Keyshia Cole @ The 2009 BET Awards

When I saw Keyshia Cole's hair the other night on the BET Awards, the first thing that came to my mind was Farrah Fawcett. The second was a an affirmation, "India, please don't go cutting your hair. You have a goal to obtain." So after that, I opened up my eyes and continued watching her hair paying little attention to the performance, which was by the way one of best.

I don't have to tell you that I was pretty excited when I opened up my email on Monday to get the following tip on how to obtain Keyshia's hairstyle created by the none other than the fabulous Ursula Stephen.

"I was definitely inspired by women of the 70's," says Ursula. "Keyshia's cut is a cross between Janet from Three's Company and Farrah Fawcett's iconic Charlie's Angels hair."

To get the look:

Step 1: Ask your stylist for layers from top to bottom. "I gave her dramatic layers but didn't want to take off too much length, and I left some pieces longer in the back to give the cut an interesting edginess to it."

Step 2: On damp hair, spray sections with a heat protectant, such as Motions Heat Seeker Protecting Spray.

Step 3: Lightly spritz each section with hairspray, such as the Motions Light Hold Spritz, and immediately flat-iron the section to give it sleek, smooth style.

Natural Woman's Lament

Hi ladies,
At our friend Emily's birthday party awhile ago, me and friend Shay were having an interesting convo. Shay, who'd recently grown out her relaxer, was trying to understand why her folks at the swanky SoHo restaurant where she works thought it was okay to touch her hair. You know, "ooh, it's so soft!" "Do I look like the star animal in a petting zoo?" she wailed. We got to talking more about her hairdo, her favorite products, and other stuff I thought my SYB Babes would be interested in...especially those of you considering going the au naturel route. So I decided to introduce her to you guys with a Q&A. SYB Babes, Shay. Shay, SYB Babes. Discuss!

TIA: Okay, so tell us why you grew out your relaxer.

SHAY: I'd always admired the natural look. Plus, I got tired of having frizzy, unmanageable hair in the summer, even with a perm.  I got a pixie cut first, so it only took less than a year to grow out.

TIA: Smart girl. So, now that you've been relaxed AND natural, which do you prefer?

SHAY: I definitely prefer my natural hair! I have the best of both worlds.  I can wear it straight for half of the year and I have the option of wearing it curly for the other half.  Also, my hair is so much healthier!

TIA: I hear that. My split ends are so bad, my hair looks like it should be blowing across the American West. What’s your haircare regimen?

SHAY: I'm CONSTANTLY changing it. These days, I wet my hair daily, let it dry a little, and then massage in avocado oil, coconut oil, or olive oil while it is damp. Then, I use Miss Jessie's "scrunch and pull" technique and style with my fingers. My Dominican stylist got me hooked on Emergencia Conditioner ($10)...it keeps my hair so shiny and healthy. It's my secret weapon! I'm also a huge fan of Ouidad's products.

TIA: They don't call Ouidad the "Queen of Curl" for nothing. So, let's get right down to it. In an effort to keep it from happening again, explain to everyone why strangers petting your hair is weird and annoying.

SHAY: Don't get me wrong, it's flattering that people want to touch my hair! But most folks don't realize that having natural hair takes a lot of effort. It looks like I just woke up and rolled out, but my hair is actually styled. I'm constantly scrunching and pulling to make sure that it looks right. When my hair is straight, no one thinks twice about touching it because they respect the fact that it's been styled, and they don't want to mess it up.

TIA: I feel like next time I see you, you'll be wearing a tee shirt that says "Respect the Natural."

xoxo,
Tia

PS...What are your biggest hair pet peeves? Dying to know!

Liberian Curl

Hey ladies,
Wow. Michael Jackson. DEVASTATED. To answer what will for sure be the "where were you when..." question we'll be hearing the rest of our lives, me and my sisters were celebrating Lauren's birthday (Happy 28th, SisterWoman!) at a swanky restaurant. Almost immediately, everyone around us began frantically checking their Blackberries and I-phones, frantically texting and generally looking shocked. How can this be? I can't fathom that La Lina will grow up in a world without MJ...or worse, that she'll grow up in a world that'll remember him as nothing more than a clown-faced freakshow (at a loss for words, I relayed his significance by performing the entire Thriller routine for her). So sad. We love you, Michael! Don't stop till you get enough!

BTW, does anyone find it somehow meaningful that he died on the 25th anniversary of Purple Rain? I feel like there's got to be some significance there, but I don't know what it is.

Whatever it is, the show must go on. And that's exactly what last night's BET Awards did! At the eleventh hour, they switched up their entire run of show to allow for a passel of MJ tributes...and oh, they were so good. NeYo singing "Lady in my Life?" Smashed it. But of course, me being me, I was transfixed by a particularly sexy hair trend. Curls, curls, and mo' curls were popping up all over the red carpet, and I loved it!

What I loved the most was that the celebs proved that ringlets aren't limited to long hair alone. From Keri Hilson's sexy, hipster crop to Alicia's shoulder-grazing moment and Beyonce's looser-curled long locks, every length was represented. Equal opportunity curls, so ooh-la-la!!

Here's how you do it, whether your hair is itty bitty or down to your butt: Pile your hair ontop of your head, and pull down a small section, starting in the back. Spritz the section with a heat-activated conditioning spray (I love Frederic Fekkai Defense Thermal/UV Protectant Spray ($25)), to protect your hair from heat damage. Then, wrap the section around the barrel of a 1/2 inch curling iron like Hot Tools Professional Marcel Curling Iron 1/2 inch, $33 (for looser waves like B's, use a 1 or 2 inch barrel). But make sure the curling iron is CLOSED before you wrap your hair...this is key. Hold for no more than 10 seconds, then slip the iron out. Voila! A perfect, springy ringlet. After you've finished your entire head, shake it out with your fingers. The sexiness is ridic. Try it!
yours in curls,
Tia

PS...this is one of my FAVORITE hairstyles to rock, as evidenced by my author photo and any other pic of me taken at an important event. It's so much more, I don't know...WANTON than stick-straight hair!

The Dry Idea

Hey ladies,
Every summer, I get at least a dozen emails from my SYB Babes, asking me what to do about excessive facial sweating. You know, when your nose and forehead--or any other place on your face--seems to perspire all the time, and seemingly for no reason? I've never had a pithy response, though. Because honestly, until now, your options would be to use mattifying gels (not strong enough), take prescription pills (side effect-inducing), or get Botox injections (they totally work for excessive sweating, but who wants Botox if it's not absolutely necessary?). Well, a couple of weekends ago, a girlfriend of mine brought something BRILLIANT to my attention. DERMAdoctor Med e Tate ($48 for 30 wipes) comes with 30 individually packed towelettes soaked in a prescription-strength anti-perspirant forumula, each meant to be swiped over sweaty spots for instant and long-lasting dryness. Truth be told, I don't have an excessive sweating problem (technically called hyperhidrosis), but I wanted to see how it worked. Honey, I tried one of these on my nose before attending a very sweaty party, and I didn't so much as glow ONCE. I couldn't believe the results! Absolutely a must if crazy perspiration has been a problem for you. Plus, you can use it anywhere you want--behind the knees, under the arms, your palms, inner thighs. Anxiety-inducing interview or public speaking appearance, here I come!
xoxo,
Tia

Budget Monday: My Favorite Bushwacker

Hey ladies,
I am no longer getting my nether-regions waxed. Yet another thing I'm blaming on the economy. Most local spas charge around $65 to tend to my flower, and I'm sorry, but mama needs that cash to buy formula. Lately, I've been taking matters into my own hands with the brilliant new Schick Quattro for Women Razor & Bikini Trimmer ($12.99). This multi-tasking, all-in-one doohickie comes with four itty bitty blades that leave you post-waxing-smooth...PLUS a waterproof trimmer that, well, shapes everything up very nicely. I am loooving this. Get into it!!
Kisses,
Tia

PS:
You know that New York Magazine is one of my favorite publications, right? Imagine how flattered I was when nymag.com's Shop-a-Matic section asked me to choose my favorite fifteen lipsticks, glosses and stains of the season! Check out my picks here, and let me know what you think.

Curly Nikki

On the Couch with Georgia

Hi CurlyNikki,

I just came across your post requesting women with 4a/4b hair to enter your CurlyNikki Spotlight, and I got super excited. Although we do not share the same texture, we share the love of hair, health and life.

Here is a little piece of my story. Shoulder length was the longest my hair has ever been, instead of getting longer it was falling out in clumps after a horrible relaxer. After that, I had to weigh my options. I chose to go the natural route. :o) I transitioned for two months with kinky twist extensions. I was surprised to see the curls forming in my hair once it was wet, so I started to cut. You can see my big chop here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PwctnleVBA.
I am a proud 4a 4b natural sista :o) I'm so glad I made the decision to go natural, never going back!

Thanks you for being an Inspiration!

Below are a few pics of my hair after the big chop and while I was relaxed.

Tangles, Shed Hair, and Knots...Oh My!

Hola Chicas!

Sorry for the late post...I've been running around all day trying to get ready for my upcoming STL trip. Since I'm the Queen of Procrastination, I had to finish paperwork, do the laundry, clean the house, pack, and do my hair -- I leave today...this is totally ri-got-dam-diculous!

While detangling 7 day hair in the shower, I came to the realization that 3-4 days is the longest I should go in between styling sessions. I stood in that shower stall for nearly 40 minutes! My hair was a tangled mess-- mostly due to the shed hairs trapped in the curls. I shed like a dog, and if left unchecked, things get out of hand VERY quickly.

Thinking about the shed hair, and time frames between styling sessions, also led me to think about my detangling tools. There are pros and cons to each of the tools I've used in the past.

Fingers
-Pros: very gentle, fewer split ends, less breakage, great defintion

-Cons: takes forever, lots of shed hairs left behind in the clumps of curls which leads to tangling and knots/matting

Jilbere Shower Comb (wide tooth)
-Pros: gentle, fewer split ends, less breakage, faster detangling

-Cons: less definition than with fingers or brush, lots of shed hairs left behind in the clumps of curls which leads to tangling and knots/matting, can pull or stretch the hair

Denman Brush

-Pros: efficient detangling, great clumping/defintion, shed hairs obliterated, easier styling and detangling next session

-Cons: If you're not careful it can rip, pull, stretch, and/or break the hair, may cause splits in fine haired curlies

My sweet spot is a finger comb/jilbere combo. To save on time and effort, I load up with Herbal Essence Totally Twisted, finger detangle thoroughly, and finally comb through with the Jilbere. When using this combo, I spend less time in the shower and lose less hair. From now on, I will attempt to style mid-week, even if it's just a wet bun. 7 days was wayyyy to long.

Every curly head is different and what works for me, may not work for you, and vice versa.

Submit a picture of your hair, and a quick write up of your successful detangling method. Hopefully, your routine may help another curly with a similar texture. As always, send submissions to nikki@curlynikki.com.

Share Your Natural Hair Compliments!

Let's keep it going! This post has been so motivational :D

We all get them...and usually when we least expect it! While walking out of the grocery store, primping in the ladies room, or ordering a drink at the bar, you've most certainly been stopped and told how amazingly awesome your natural curls are.

I think I get the most compliments on days that I feel like an absolute frizz bucket, and usually from people that are born with straight hair...if you catch my drift. But, no matter who it's coming from, as long as it appears genuine, it feels GREAT and can literally put that swag back in your step. Also, it confirms that all of your time, energy, and moola spent, has been well worth it!

I'll be leaving town for St. Louis, MO in the next couple of days. Tonight, I plan to do a moisturizing deep treatment with Pantene Relaxed and Natural Mask, and then proceed to Twist-n-Curl. I'm hoping that hair styled tonight, will last into next week. We'll see!

So, what are your hair plans for tonight, or for the weekend?!

Later Gators,
Nik

Jennika- A Story of Transition

CN:Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?
Jennika: I transitioned for 13 months. Not sure if that is long or short, but I wasn't mentally prepared to have short hair. Also, I wasn't sure what type of hair style I wanted for my wedding.

CN: When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?
Jennika: I BC'ed soon after my wedding, June 2. I loved what I saw! The curl pattern in the front was more loose then the back, and I think the stylist saw my confusion, so she pulled the front into some twists for me. It was a huge sigh of relief to have the remaining relaxer cut off. I felt very free.

CN:
What was your transition routine?
Jennika: I decided to go natural while I had braids in my hair. When I took them out, I flat ironed. I would wash weekly, and use Biolage products(the shampoo/conditioner I used while relaxed) until I started reading on what was good for my natural hair. Then I began using a shampoo/conditioner I found, called the Naked Bee. It worked well for the natural and relaxed hair, in my opinion.

CN:
What was your staple hair style during the transition?
Jennika: At the beginning, I flat ironed every two weeks or so. I decided in Jan 09 I wasn't going to flat iron again until my wedding in May. From then on, I would wash and wear my phony puff. There was a few times I went to the stylist to get my hair trimmed, and she would do a twist out on me, which I loved!

CN:
How did you moisturize your hair to prevent breakage at the new growth line?
Jennika: I was much more worried about taking care of my natural/relaxed line, and I think by way of that, my new growth line just happened to get moisturized! I deep conditioned whenever I washed. I used a coconut milk DC by Palmers.

CN:
Why did you choose to go natural?
Jennika: I didn't get my first relaxer until I was 14, so I remember my hair before I relaxed. I loved how my hair looked relaxed, but I was worried about what all those chemicals were doing to my hair. So I thought long and hard about why I relaxed. I came to the conclusion, that I didn't think I was as pretty, without my hair straight. Sad, I know. This was just the surface of a whole heap of self esteem issues I didn't realize I had! The transition period was more then a physical transition for me. It was VERY mental. I mean, there were days my hair was not looking so hot. But I had to go to work and fight through that "I am not looking too good today" feeling. In the end, I love walking around knowing that I am not my hair.

  • The first pic is my hair, 7 months post relaxer
  • The second, is my twist out
  • The third is a week after my BC

Silky Coils- A Story of Transition

CN: Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?

SC: Surprisingly, I was a short term transitioner. I actually had planned to transition for 12 months…but it ended up being like 8 months. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I would react to the natural me. With taking a longer time to transition, I wasn’t fully committed and I could jump ship as needed. Lol. While that sounds bad, it can be scary embarking on this journey. But in the end, all worked out well.

CN: When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?

SC: I actually chopped it all off last minute. Lol. It was November 2008 before Thanksgiving. I had braids in for like two and half months and wanted them out! Well, despite the advice I was given, my hair still did not play right (natural and still permed). It got knotted up and I had no choice really. Initially I was so frustrated and honestly contemplated if I had made the right decision. In the end, it worked out well. I love my hair and can’t want to see what the future holds for this kinky relationship!

CN: What was your transition routine (products included)?

SC: First, I continued to go see my permed stylist. She used the same products (that are good for permed hair) and would blow dry and straighten for me. I did this for like 2 months. Next, I got a weave for the summer months. Again, I went to the permed stylist to clean and restyle. After the weave was removed, I found my current natural hair stylist who would dry or wet twist my hair. She used the Jamaica Lime wax to twist and set my hair. While having the weave, I used a random braid and weave oil to keep my hair moisturized. For the twist, I would create my own concoction that included Shea, jojoba and other essential oils. This was used strictly to moisturize my hair. Satin scarves and caps are a must as well.

After I BC'ed, I began using s few CD products, Lisa’s Hair Elixir and the Rosemary Mint Shampoo…really good products. It wasn’t until now, that I really started to hone in on a set of products that worked for my hair. KBB is a good product line to use as well.

CN: What was your staple hair style during the transition?

SC: I would have to say twisting is what I did the most. Whether it was a dry (when they blow out your hair then twist it) or wet finger twist, I kept my hair twisted to prevent breakage, but to also embrace my new look. My whole life I had long luxurious hair (silky mane)….so having short hair was new and fun to me.

CN: How did you moisturize your hair to prevent breakage at the new growth line?

SC: This is where the Lisa’s Hair Elixir came into play. I made sure that my hair was moisturized at all times. I didn’t necessarily have to do this daily, but I would do daily scalp and end checks. I also had my stylist trim the ends as needed. I was fortunate, for I don’t easily develop split ends. I was a nut…lol…I was afraid that I would damage my hair going natural, but my hair is actually stronger than I thought. As long as I took care of it, it would take care of me. …and to this day it holds true.

CN: Why did you choose to go natural?

SC: There came a point in my life were a change needed to be made and with turning 30, I wanted to start a new healthier holistic chapter in my life. Along with embarking on a natural hair journey, I also was traveling down a weight loss path as well. So choosing to go natural was not just about my hair but about my life. The way I thought of myself, the people I associated with, the words that came out of my mouth, what I put into my body, etc. The new chapter was to grow as a person in all aspects of life AND learning to love myself for who God made. So the hair was just one prong of the many that was all being transitioned over the last year and half.

I’ve always had a nice healthy grade of hair (prior to being natural). Even with a perm, my hair never broke off, or thinned, etc. So with wanting to be natural (no chems, heat, etc) I was convinced that I would be even happier with my kinky coils. While I had frustrations (never regrets) in the beginning, the support of this blog and other natural sistas have given me more confidence and excitement with having my hair. Now I’m natural and loving life!!!

I’m actually documenting all my journeys in several places if your readers want to follow along:

PICS
~ The first pic is of me with my silky mane. Lovely and healthy as you can see!
~ 2nd is my dry twist set (that I referred to while transitioning)
~ 3rd is of my homemade twist out set (again while transitioning)
~ 4th is of a transitioning weave
~ 5th is a pic of my hair after the BC

The rest of the pics are me NOW...happy and nappy. Last two are my results this week from doing your historic Twist-n-Curl set using KBB.

Curlynikki Testimonial- Jalana!

Hi Curlynikki,

So I've been stalking you since before you started your site, and I just want to say WOW! You're amazing and so motivating, congratulations on all your success! Anyway, I wanted to say that I've learned so much since following you on Naturally Curly, Nappturality and now Curlynikki. I did my big chop years ago but had no clue what I was doing. I re-permed for corporate jobs (because I thought I had to) and dyed to loosen curls in the beginning.

I was in a huge state of denial and not used to seeing my natural hair. With your help, I stopped dying about a year and a half ago (but my last perm and BC was in 1999) and the change in my hair is amazing!!!!! I wanted to share some pics - please feel free to post if you'd like. They're dated so you can see my progress (I'm still struggling with trimming so the growth could probably be better, but the thickness and health are friggin' amazing but I'm at the mercy of scissor happy hairdressers for now). Thanks again - you're such an inspiration and not just for hair but for being fearless, creative and limitless with your biz!

My Interview with Get Togetha: The Lifestyle Blog!

Lifestyle and Home Decor blog Get Togetha teamed up with me for an interview. I had a lot of fun thinking of the answers. It took me multiple attempts over a three day span to answer one of them! Want to find out my secret to flawless skin, how I found my love for makeup and an interesting fact that you would never guess about me? Read the interview to find out!

By the way, we have some big things in the works for you! My official website is under construction, it's coming along beautifully. Makeup artist Meagan Shea and I are working hard on the details of the upcoming seminar (we pushed the date back to August 16th) that will answer a ton of your questions. Plus there are a few more tricks that I can't let out of the bag just yet...stay tuned!!!

New Collection: MAC Colour Craft

I hope you're ready for this mega collection debuting this Thursday. There are over 25 products in this collection! Wowzer!! Not to mention, this is a Mineralize series. The eye shadows and blushes are baked to perfection, and can be used dry (for soft, sheer color) or wet (for an intense, more metallic effect). My budget does not permit me to get everything, but here's what sticks out to me so far. Be ready, July 9th, It's on!!!

Warm Blend Mineralize Skin Finish looks like it will be just warm enough for brown skin! I haven't seen it yet, but the description says that it's a three layer mix of Antique Gold, Mahogany Bronze and Copper! Please let it appear as gorgeous as it sounds!
Sunny By Nature Mineralize Skin Finish sounds heavenly as well.  It's described as rich bronze with pink pearl
You already know that the 109 brush is my all time favorite foundation brush.  It airbrushes your face to perfection!  People always complain about the shedding, which I deal with as well.  Here's a tip: when you use the brush, let the bristles graze your skin ever so lightly.  There's no need to dig the brush in your face! lol

The 131 brush is so intriguing to me! It's described as a A flat, tapered face brush featuring a combination of short, natural fibres and longer synthetic fibres making it ideal for the highlighting/contouring of Mineralize Skinfinish and all powder products. I'm thinking I'm going to have to have it....

Summer Lip Colors that look Great on All of Us!

It's time to re-post some of the hottest lip colors of the Summer! I created this video months ago to prepare women of all shapes, colors and lip sizes for a new experience. Some of you may not be terrified of color. Some of you might still wear frosty silver lipstick with black lip liner (Please say you don't). All in all, check out some of the color combinations and take a chance! Summer is the perfect time to wear daring lip colors. If you feel like you are going to overdo it and people will see your lips from a mile away, apply a thin coat of the color and top it off with a clear lip gloss. You can't go wrong!!! By the way, the music is by Dwele. I LOVE this song!

Keep a look out! I'll be posting a video just like this featuring nude lip colors! I've got over 15 combinations picked out, and I'm trying hard to narrow it down to 10!

New Video Tutorial: Jennifer Lopez Makeup

I have been talking about creating this video for weeks now! I finally re-created the look that Scott Barnes so skillfully painted on Jennifer Lopez. Ain't It Funny was such a hot track a few years ago. The look stuck out in my mind all this time and i hope it satisfies your urge for color! The actual pictures of myself were a toned down version of the look, I didn't mean to post those. Darn! Enjoy!

P.S. Details of the two newest MAC collections and my must have picks will be available later in the afternoon!

The Indian Make-up Diva

Anastasia Brow Pencil: I Think I Hear a Stampede

Most brow pencils are quite pigmented and they require some finesse so that you don't overdo it. I would know, I have very thick brows which are no-so-thick as they approach my nose. Enhancing my brows there is like walking a thin line between naturally-born female and 'wow, that operation wasn't exactly a success.' I tend to skip enhancing my brows altogether simply because I end up looking so ridiculously severe and angry. Enter Anastasia's wonderful brow pencil.

Because of this pencil, I no longer have to dread being questioned on my femininity or my friendliness. The pencil is hard and waxy and I think this is what keeps my eyebrow hairs in place all day. I also am guessing that this is what also makes the brow pencil a bit sheer, which is exactly the reason it is so perfect.

Brow pencils for people with black hair are usually too severe, too dark, too brown, too gray, etc. Anastaria's brow pencil in Brunette is a perfect natural enhancer to my dark brows. Since the product is sheer, it really gives you the ability to build up to the look you want. Even then, it takes a lot of work to look like your brows are anything but natural with this brow pencil.

The sparse-r area near my nose is a true test to whether a brow pencil is worth its weight in blush. Anastasia's brow pencil has surpassed this test. I can fill in the inner corner of my brows and the result is so unbelievably natural that I went out to get a back-up of this. Oh, and did I mention it lasts all day? Run or stampede your way to get this brow pencil. It's a dark-haired girl's best friend (brow-wise anyway).

Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge Part 2

Here's a continuation of the Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge tutorial. Hope you like it.

Step 1:
Dab some bronzer onto the pointy side of the Blending Sponge. Don't scoop up too much but I like to apply it from the sponge onto the face rather than dab it on the face and then blend out. For some reason, I find that this gives you a more natural finish and control.

Step 2:
Place the sponge on the apple of the cheek and slowly blend the cheekbone and temple.

Step 3:
With light, fluttery strokes (doesn't this line sound like it came from a Fabio-drenched-drenched-in-oil-and-hair-ablazin'-with-hapless-heroine-in-tow-romance novel?) blend the bronzer all the way into the temple. This is where the shape of the sponge really helps. I love using the slope/point to follow the line of my cheekbone and can really direct where I want to place the bronzer. It also allowes for great precision blending.

Step 4:
With the round side, 'bounce' the sponge over the bronzer. This sheers it out a bit and blends it seamlessly into the skin. If you want to add intensity repeat the process until you get the desired depth.

Final Result:
Ta-dah! Here is the final result.

Using the Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge Part 1

Here is the promised tutorial on using the Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge. Excuse the stains on mine. No matter what I do, the stains don't ever go out.

Step 1:

Dot foundation on your face. I like to do this because I find that I use less product than if I were to put it ont he back of my hand and then transfer it to my face with a brush or sponge.

Step 2:

Bounce the round side of the blending sponge over the foundation. Keep bouncing it to spread the foundation.

Step 3:

Dot some concealor on problem areas with the pointy side of the sponge.

Step 4:
With the pointy side, blend the cocnealor into the nooks and crannies of the area. I love this side of the sponge as it really lets me get great application on my under-eyes and the sides of my nose.

Step 5:
With the round side, bounde the sponge gently over the concealor to blend it into the foundation.

Work Essentials Part 3: Cheeks

Now that we're still not up to date with the promised updates (I know they should be here soon. So sorry, been sick and had a sinus infection), I have an update on my work essentials.

Bobbi Brown Pink Truffle Rouge Pot
This is my favourite cream blush of all time. I don't think I can think of any other blush that is as flattering on my nc45 skin as this one. The texture is a little thicker than your average cream blush but it blends out easily. The finish you get is a dewy, this-is-all-part-of-my-natural-skin glow that helps me look less like the groggy undead when I wake up after a sleepless night where the neighbour's car alarm goess off 6 times (This is a true story. I hate my neighbour). The colour is a perfect dusty rose that is both non-offensive and subdued while adding the right amount of colour to brighten the face. The colour can easily be built for extra drama. This is one of the few staples that I think almost all desi women, regardless of skintone, can wear.

MAC Blushbaby

If I had to choose between all my MAC blushes (every time I write something about choosing between my blushes I have to remind myself that this is only hypothetical and it won't really happen), I would choose Blushbaby. This mauvy-rose blsuh is matte and looks uneventful in the pan but once worn gives my cheekbones definition while adding the right hint of colour. It doesn't look the least dull or flat on my cheeks. Do not be afraid of the seemingly unpigmented state of the blush as it has the right balance of colour to enhance my nc45 skintone. All in all, the perfect work neutral.

Parvathy Omanakuttan at Cannes

I'm not quite sure through which virtues Parvathi Omanakuttan got invited to attend Cannes but she managed to stun the world wearing a gown made out of King Midas's (golden) pet crocodile's hide. If you squint enough, you'll notice that her make-up is also stunning-in a good way. I adore her make-up and think it's perfect for many occasions.

  • MAC eyeshadow in All That Glitters
  • MAC eyeshadow in Bronze
  • MAC pencil Technakohl in Graphblack
  • CoverGirl Volume Exact
  • Vincent Longo lipstick in Boccacino
  • MAC Clear Lipglass

Recommended Tools:
  • Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge for the tinted moisturizer, concealor, blush, and highlighter.
  • MAC 239 for patting on shadow
  • MAC 217 for blending and crease shadow
  • MAC 219 for smudging the eyeliner
  • MAC 187, 188, or 116 (use a light hand for Dolce Vita with this brush) for blush

Face:
Prep your skin with the Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel (yes I'm actually serious about my claims on this) or a primer of your choice. Then, 'bounce' on the Inner Light tinted moisturizer with the blending sponge. I really like this tinted moisturizer as you need little to get a polished look and it gives you the glow we're after for this look.

Check to see what all problem areas need some extra help and blend in some Full Coverage Concealor with the blending sponge.

Don't apply translucent powder just yet. Apply it only after you're done with the cream blush.

Highlight:
Apply the highlighter after you're done with foundation. Blend out the Glistening Flush accentuating stick with either your fingers or the sponge. Place the highlighter on top of your temples and blend outward. Add a bit to the apple of your cheeks as well. Also apply the Glistening Flush on the browbone, bridge of your nose, and your cupid's bow and blend.

Cheeks:
Add warmth and definition with the Terracotta cream blush placed on the cheekbone and slightly under it. Blend outwards and towards the temple while smoothing out the edges.

Smile and apply the Dolce Vita blush lightly onto the apple of the cheek to give your cheeks a slight, warm pop.

Now apply translucent powder to set the make-up.

Eyes:
Pat on some Primer Potion to prep lids for colour.

Brows:
Parvathy's eyebrows are strong, clean, and dramatic . So pluck away any stray hairs and follow the natural arch of your eyebrows. Next, slightly make the brows thicker (and darker if you're comfortable with it) than you're used to. You don't want to go overboard thickening your eyebrows, just make them a slightly more dramatic version of what you were gifted with. Set with a brow gel if needed.

Eyelid:
Apply All That Glitters to the lid and blend into the crease.

Crease:
Define the outer third of the crease with the Bronze eyeshadow and blend outwards toward the browbone.

Highlight:
I like to keep the browbone highlight subtle for this look so I would leave it with the highlighter we already applied. However, if you want some extra drama, apply the shadow of your choice very lightly to the browbone.

Eyeliner:
Rim the lower lash line and waterline with Graphblack. Line the tip lid from the inner corner to the outer corner. Start with a thin line and gradually thicken the line as you get to the end. Make sure to keep the line thin-medium. Smudge the liner to soften the look and reapply Graphblack on the smudged areas to get soft drama.

Mascara:
Curl lashes and apply Volume Exact generously to create Bambi-lashes. You can apply individual lashes at the outer corner for exagerated drama.

Lips:
Apply the Boccacino lipstick and top off with clear Lipglass for extra shine.

Clumps of Mascara's Three Random Bits

How beautiful is this photo? I took it a year or so ago when I was visiting my Little (Big Brothers Big Sisters, holla!) in Tampa, Florida. It looks like the bridge is just going and going and going.

Decided to try something different and share Three Random Tidbits with y'all.
Ready?

1) When Clumps of Mascara first started, I never did mascara reviews. I didn't start doing them until Clumps turned a year old.

2) Clumps readers are insanely hilarious! No.....really. I had no idea that y'all were so funny. Check out the Beauty Bee-haviors: I Can't Stand When _____ post.

3) I drink green smoothies every single day. I am obsessed with them. I was asked to do a post about how I make them. What do y'all think about that?

Now it's your turn! Tell me any random three bits. It could be about anything. Feel like venting? Go 'head and get you anonymity on. Just don't insult me because....wowsers, I have had enough of that for the week. *wipes recently threaded brow* Don't worry. I've got some thick skin.

Now shoot....what's on your mind?

Beauty Review: Carol's Daughter Hair Milk and Tui Hair Smoothie

I have more Carol's Daughter products to share with you!

I received an email after the last Carol's Daughter review that I thought I would answer in this post.

Q: Are Carol's Daughter's products just for women with natural hair?

A: Absolutely not! Anyone with any hair type can use these products. My hair is natural AND loc'd. My opinion of these products will probably only benefit other ladies with hair like mine. But I love to review them anyway....just in case something I say peaks your interest enough to want to make some purchases yourself.

And with that, let's bring it on!

Hair Milk

Price: 4 out of 5 ($12 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
"This lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production and hydrate strands. Infused with a splash of lily of the valley fragrance in a rich base of oils, shea butter, cocoa butter, and vitamins E and C, Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce." (source)

The truth:
Hmmm, it isn't the best on my locs but I could see how it works well for ladies with curly hair.

What I loved about it: The consistency is great. It isn't at all sticky.

What I didn't like:
I'm not the biggest fan on the smell. I love lemongrass in my food but not so much when it is the primary ingredient (scent). But it's a personal thang. I have friends who love the small!

Overall: I think this product would be divine for ladies with curly hair. My girl Wes over at Honey Brown Sugar comes to mind. It doesn't work so well with my locs simply because they soak it up so quickly. It is as if I never put anything in my hair. HA! The consistency rocks though.

It isn't meant to go on the scalp but I used on mine anyway. And it feels good!

Next up....

Tui Hair Smoothie

Price: 3 out of 5 ($19 from Sephora.com)
Packaging: 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:
"Tui Hair Smoothie is an intense conditioning treatment for normal to dry hair made from a super-rich emulsion of shea butter, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil. Calming chamomile aids in taming of frizzy, unmanageable hair, while the fragrant Tui blend of guava, mango, and passion fruit tantalize the senses." (source)

The truth:
Wow, this stuff smells delicious....and my hair adores it!

What I loved about it: I love love loooove the smell. Think of a sweet mango mixed with honey and raspberries. Random, I know but this stuff is delicious.

What I didn't like:
It is a little on the pricey side.

Overall: Wowsers. My hair loves this Intense Conditioning Treatment. Like.....a lot. After shampooing my hair I apply a generous amount of the Tui Hair Smoothie all over and let it sit in a shower cap. Because I have super dry hair, I usually have to apply some olive oil as well. After rinsing out, my hair is soft. And it smells divine!

I wish this you could get this scent in a lotion. Now that would be dope!

Stay tuned for more Carol's Daughter reviews. This review will also appear on my hair blog: LocRocker.com.

L'Oreal HIP Matte and Metallic Shadow Duos

Before MAC Cosmetics came into my world there was L'Oreal HIP. At one point I owned just about all of their eye shadows. You really can't beat their prices--especially when your local drugstore is running a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale.

Girl yes....L'Oreal HIP's eyeshadows are the ish. Especially for my newbies out there.

L'O HIP has recently released two more lines of eye shadows: mattes and metallics. I can dig it! This means more versatility for looks. Because I already have so many bright shadows, I decided to pick up one from each line; both are safe colors but I love them just the same.

Poppy
Matte Shadow Duo

Charged
Metallic Shadow Duo

Both eyes!

....and all L'Oreal HIP shadow duos have the trunk space at the bottom that holds a sponge tip applicator. Back in the day they used to have mirrors. Heyyyy, what happened, mayn?

I primed my eyes with this:

Yes, I LOVE L'Oreal HIP's Cream Paint in Witty. I actually use this on top of Too Faced's Shadow Insurance to really make my color POP.

I suggest checking out my video because I feel like the looks look A LOT better in person than they do in these photos.

I am impressed with these duos and plan on purchasing more in the near future---but not until a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale comes along. I have a long way to go before I master the art of applying matte eye shadows but L'Oreal HIP's seem to do good job. I didn't get any fall-out. And the metallic shadows really are bling-tastic.

You can purchase these duos from around $8.99-$9.99 at Ulta and drugstores.

Whatcha think? Would you invest in these babies or not so much?

Beauty Bee-haviors: I can't stand when______

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

There are some things that annoy me in the beauty world. But I know I'm not the only one. There are a few trends that have made me go "Uh?" And I know I am not the only one.

What beauty trend or look drives you up a wall?

Can I tell you one of mine?

Black eyeliner on the lips

I can not STAND the sight of this. Like, it literally makes me cringe. And yet....it STILL seem to be so prevalent here in Florida. Yes, believe it or not, I once wore black eyeliner on the lips in high school. I'm sure a great deal of us did but if this trend (is it even a trend?) doesn't die out, I will be forced to walk around with baby wipes and risk getting knocked out to remove the horrid black liner around the lippies of these ladies.

There.

I said it.

You turn. Fill in the blank.

When it comes to beauty: I can't stand when _________.

Natural Beauty: Why Castile Soap rocks my socks....

I am going to start featuring more natural product reviews on Clumps of Mascara. I mean, it only makes sense! Natural products are staples in my home and very rarely do I show them love here on the blog. That changes today!

Have I told y'all how much I love castile soap?

I buy the different fragrances and different sizes and I just LOVE them.

Please tell me you know what Castile soap is? It's just that! Soap. And it's all natural. I ain't playin'....check out the ingredients.

It looks like regular liquid soap when poured out.

Add a few drops of water and what do you get? Soapy goodness!

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps has 18 uses. Okay, sooo...I haven't found all 18 but I'm using castile soap daily!

-I wash my hair with it (Peppermint or Tea Tree)
-I clean my bathroom and kitchen with it. (Unscented)
-I wash my face with it (Lavender or Almond)
-I clean my make-up brushes with (Unscented)
-I remove stains with it (Unscented)
-I use it as a body wash (Almond or Citrus)
-I have used it as a toothpaste..but giiirl, don't swallow it (Peppermint)

I have developed a great love affair with castile soap. This is one product that I can not leave home without when traveling.

You can find out more about castile soap here. If you are looking to incorporate more natural products in your lifestyle, castile soap is a must have. And it pretty affordable and easy to find. They are popping up at drugstores and I have known to find some at Target stores. But of course they can easily be found at natural food stores and markets like Wild Oats, Whole Foods and Trader's Joe.

Natural Hair Rules

Erica F. HairStory

1. How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for 14 months.

2. Why and how did you go natural? (Did you transition? What products and styles did you use?)

I went natural because I had a goal for healthy hair. I am a firm believer that Good Hair = Healthy Hair in whatever form you choose to do with it relax, texturize, wear it natural you name it. I had a relaxer for about 9 years of my life and my hair was damaged, thin, and balding in some spots. I wanted a change and my choices were either to cut my damaged hair or to go natural of course I the latter. I transitioned with Kinky twists, micro braids, and Senegalese twists for a year. Some products I used while transitioning were Boundless tresses growth serum (growthspecifics.com), Suave conditioner to wash my roots, and peppermint oil for my scalp. In between braids or twists I began cutting off my relaxed hair in order for my natural hair to grow faster. A year to the date of my last relaxer I cut off the rest of the relaxed ends and haven't put extensions in my hair since. I love my natural hair and will NEVER relax again!!!

3. How would you describe this experience?

The experience going natural is EMPOWERING! There is always a journey to get you to where you want to go and the experience its priceless. You begin to learn so much about yourself, your heritage why black women started to straighten their hair back in the day, the stigmas behind having "nappy" hair, and how much your hair doesn't define who you are. Your black is beautiful in any form and this journey to natural hair will teach you to embrace YOU!

4. What was others response to your naturality?

My family made jokes about me being "afrocentric" and trying to be Angela Davis, and they still make jokes to this day. During my transition they didn't believe I was going to go through with being natural until I cut my hair off and started to rock a fro. To be honest you shouldn't care about what others think, say or do about you being a natural beauty. IT IS YOUR HAIR and you are natural for you. Having the versatility to wear your hair curly, straight, up, down, in an afro, in twists, is priceless and you should dare to be different.

Honey, a sweet treat for your hair

From Examiner.com Featured on Natural Hair Rules.com

July 3, 4:52 PM

Honey naturally attracts and holds moisture. It is also a natural antiseptic and contains antioxidants. Honey is packed with vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, sulphur, iron, zinc and vitamins B1, B2, B3, which aid in hair growth. It can be added to conditioners, rinses and pomades.

Most of the honey hair recipes I've come across contain a mix of honey and olive oil. Try using this honey (pre-poo) treatment. Mix honey and olive oil in equal parts, distribute on hair, put on your shower cap and let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing and washing.

Here is another pre-wash treatment from Deecoily of Nappturality.com, it should be used before shampooing to condition the scalp and repair damaged hair. She suggests that you use it regularly if your hair is dry or ends are split. You will need 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 teaspoons of honey, 5 drops rosemary, lavender or geranium essential oil, a small cup, a ceramic or glass bowl, a small stainless steel spoon, a plastic shower cap and a comfortably hot towel.

In a cup sitting in hot water, warm the olive oil and honey (or use the microwave but be careful not to scold yourself). Stir in your choice of essential oil and mix well. While the mixture is still warm, apply it all over your hair, massaging well into your scalp. Cover your hair with the shower cap (or large plastic bag) wrap the towel around your head and leave on for 10-15 minutes. For severely damaged hair, she suggests that you leave the mixture on up to 30 minutes. Remove the towel and shower cap, and wash your hair with a mild or baby shampoo.

I mix honey in my final rinse after shampooing. I use two to three cups of tea (I use green tea, but you can use your favorite, you may also need to increase the amount of water depending on your hair length), one teaspoon of melted honey (if you add more water, use 1 tablespoon), one tablespoon of lemon juice. After making the tea, add the honey and mix well, then add the lemon juice. Remember to let the mixture cool before pouring over your hair and do not rinse. I follow with a leave-in conditioner and style. A tablespoon of ACV - apple cider vinegar - can also be added to this mixture.

Elaine H. HairStory!

-How did you go natural (Did you transition? What products and styles did you use)?

I’ve been chemical free for 16 months and all naturally me for 8 months…not that long I know but I feel like it’s been longer.

-What was others responds to your naturality?

Honestly it depends on who I encountered. Lol. Let’s start with my family – my mom was shocked and while she will NEVER admit it, I don’t think she initially liked it. I grew up with a family of women who straightened their hair with chemicals…that’s all I knew. Even before the perms, my mother use to use a pressing comb…like they were done when they were young. Now, she likes it, but still puts her two cents in on it. They really like it when my hair is twisted.
My sister was transitioning and actually went natural before me, so she was my biggest cheerleader…along with my aunt. I knew that I could show them two my recent styles and get an honest and supportive decision. When other family members saw my hair, some were just shocked (cause literally the last time they saw me, I had a long silky mane…and now I had a kinky fro! Lol. Some made fun, others it didn’t matter.

Most of my friends have not seen me in awhile OR they saw me with braids/weave as I transitioned (I live out of town). So they’ve seen pictures and thinks my hair is gorgeous. I actually inspired a line sister of mine to transition back to natural after her experiencing my journey. That made me feel really good!

People at work (except the ethnic minorities) actually didn’t say anything to me when I showed up one weekend with my hair in a dry twist (while transitioning). Then when I got the braids (lots of compliments) but when I chopped it off and showed up on Monday…no response. I always get a response with the longer hair (braids or weave) but never really anything with my puff or fro…..very interesting…

The ultimate lesson is that you have to love yourself even when you feel that others do not. While some of the haterizm may be out of love and uncertainty, you have to understand why they feel that way. Yes some of the negativity should roll off your back, but remember that people are afraid of the unknown.

-How did you go natural?

Surprisingly, I was a short term transitioner. I actually had planned to transition for 12 months…but it ended up being like 8 months. I actually chopped it all off last minute. Lol. It was November 2008 before Thanksgiving. I had braids in for like two and half months and wanted them out! Well, despite the advice I was given, my hair still did not play right (natural and still permed). It got knotted up and I had no choice really.

After I BC, I begin using s few CD products, Lisa’s Hair Elixir and the Rosemary Mint Shampoo…really good products. It wasn’t until now, that I really started to hone in on a set of products that worked for my hair. KBB is a good product line to use as well. I totally decided that I want to use all natural products from now on…period!

-How would you describe this experience?

Honestly I wasn’t sure how I would react to the natural me. I wanted to do something different, but it hadn’t really hit me on what I was actually doing. With taking a longer time to transition, I wasn’t fully committed and I could jump ship as needed. Lol. While that sounds bad, it can be scary embarking on this journey. I’ve had ups and downs about my new look and how it fits into my overall appearance. We all have a standard for the way we want to look, but sometimes that can be unrealistic. Initially I was so frustrated and honestly contemplated if I had made the right decision. End the end, it worked out well. I love my hair and can’t want to see what the future lies for this kinky relationship!

-Transition routine and products used

First, I continued to go see my permed stylist. She used the same products (that are good for permed hair) and would blow dry and straighten for me. I did this for like 2 months. Next, I got weave for the summer months. Again, I went to the permed stylist to clean and restyle. After the weave was removed, I found my current natural hair stylist who would dry or wet twist my hair. She used the Jamaica lime wax to twist and set my hair. While having the weave, I used your random braid and weave oil to keep my hair moisturized. For the twist, I would create my own concoction that included shea, jojoba and other essential oils. This was used strictly to moisturize my hair. Satin scarves and caps are a must as well.

The most often style I used was twisting. Whether it was a dry (when they blow out your hair then twist it) or wet finger twist, I kept my hair twisted to prevent breakage, but to also embrace my new look. My whole life I had long luxurious hair (silky mane)….so having short hair was new and fun to me.

As for products, this is where the Lisa’s Hair Elixir came into play. I made sure that I my hair was moisturized at all times.

-Why did you choose to go natural?

There came a point in my life were a change needed to be made and with turning 30, I wanted to start a new healthier holistic chapter in my life.

I’m actually documenting all my journeys in several places if your followers want to follow along:
• Twitter – efficient1 (username) (well….you are a witness that you never know what you may get with me on this. Lol)
• Blog – http://www.theorakale25.blogspot.com/ (naturality, weight loss, current events, randomness, etc)
• Fotki – Silky25 (username) – mostly where my hair journey is being documented

R.I.P Micheal Jackson

Ok so I was going to do a inspirational yet informative post about natural hair today. But the word fail me to do so. I have literally grown up with Micheal Jackson. I remember watching the Thriller video on MTV at the age of 3. I would watch Moonwalker every Friday in elementary school. I would sleep in a MJ shirt that my dad passed down to me from the Bad concert. What would the world be like without Micheal Jackson? I know people around the world are in tears.

My prayers and heart go out to his family. Most of all I pray his soul was saved.

I'm adding this in response to one of the comments on this post. This is an expression of MY FAITH and not a debate so don't take it as such. I ask if you have different beliefs to be tolerant of others belief system and don't use terms such as "saved mess". Its offensive and disrespectful to that person.

I do not claim any denominations. I'm pure christian my religion is have a relationship/friendship with Jesus Christ and I never shy away from an opportunity to share my faith. What does it mean to be saved? The dictionary defines salvation as
1. the act of saving or protecting from harm, risk, loss, destruction, etc.
2.the state of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
3.a source, cause, or means of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
4. Theology. deliverance from the power and penalty of sin; redemption.

As a christian, my belief is that we are all sinners and Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins.
Jesus is the Son of God and he died and was risen from the dead to give eternity life to all who believe.
"that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Romans 10:13
For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

To be save is to have eternal life with God in Heaven. So yes I prayer that Micheal Jackson was save but nobody but him and God can say yay or nay. My prayers of his salvation have not dampen my prayer for his family's peace and comfort in this bereavement.

As christian, I am at fault because these prayers come too late. I should have been praying while he was yet alive. From this experience I have learn to pray for my brother and my sister while they are yet on this earth. I urge you if it is in your faith to do the save.

Blessings
